Hace 120 años - el 30 de noviembre de 1897- nació en Kansas (Estados Unidos) Virginia Henderson, una figura relevante de la enfermería del siglo XX y cuyos modelos y teorías son considerados fundamentales en el desarrollo de la profesión.

Durante su trabajo en centros tan prestigiosos como la Universidad de Columbia, el Strong Memorial Hospital de Rochester o la Universidad de Yale, desarrolló una intensa labor de investigación en los fundamentos de esta profesión, que entre otras cosas, le llevaron a confirmar la enfermería como una disciplina independiente de la medicina y dedicada fundamentalmente a “Ayudar al individuo sano o enfermo en la realización de actividades que contribuyan a su salud y su bienestar, recuperación o a lograr una muerte digna. Actividades que realizaría por sí mismo si tuviera la fuerza, voluntad y conocimientos necesarios. Hacerle que ayude a lograr su independencia a la mayor brevedad posible”.

Con motivo de este aniversario hemos querido echar una mirada a sus obras, que recoge el Catálogo de la National Library of Medicine, y donde se plasman y desarrollan todas las ideas que provocaron el gran cambio teórico y práctico que experimentaría la enfermería a partir de ese momento. Su obra más importante y conocida sigue siendo “The Nature of Nursing” que publicó en 1966, pero antes y después su producción científica siguió dejándonos excelentes trabajos como los que podéis ver a continuación:
